Another Day of being Black in the White Public World

So, here I am again…asking anyone who wants to hear, do you want to know what it is like to be black in the public white world? I say public white world because the experiences I have had in this world are not the experiences that I had in the military world growing up as a military brat. In the military, there was one common goal…to secure the safety of America and everyone who lives here. Rank also mattered more than color…at times….But any way, that’s another blog for another time… Right now, I want to share with you what happened to ME last night… (more…)

Come walk with me…

To my dear Non-black brothers and sisters,

The old saying is that you never know what it’s like to be someone or understand their consequences until you walk a mile in their shoes…Well, would you like to know what it’s like to be Black in America? Come with me and walk 3 miles in my shoes…

I got up this morning as usual, feeling refreshed and happy to be alive, put on my workout clothes and headed outdoors…into the fresh air, a little sunshine and the freedom that I see symbolized in my feathered friend who was the first one to greet me on my front lawn… (more…)

Where are you NOW?!!!: A Call to ACTION!

A call to action In 6 sentences…With the attacks on women from ALL fronts, where is the voice of NOW? Where is the representation of the National Organization for Women? NOW is the time we should hear the voice. NOW is the time for a united front to take on these battles. NOW is the time and NOW is not is not visibly present. Move your voices from the margins and place them in the core, the mainstream, where the struggles, wars, and battles are being fought. NOW!

Boundaries and the Media…Interviewing 101

This entry will be quick. Once again, I’m watching the Today Show and Matt Lauer is interviewing a mother/wife who lost parts of her leg saving her children during the recent tornado in Kentucky. During the interview, Matt begins to talk to Stephanie Decker, the mother, about the special, private and personal message she left for her husband. So…the story is…she knows that she has been seriously injured, she may not make it, and she takes out her phone and records a very personal message to her husband who is obviously not there during the tornado. Matt asks the husband if he listened to it yet. The husband replies, no, he is not ready to hear it and it’s going to be a long time before he listens to it.  It’s basically just too hard for him to listen to right now. (more…)

Beauty AND Slavery found in the Eyes of the Beholder?

So the debate about the statements made by Bryant Gumbel (concerning David Stern) are racist or aren’t they? Is that the question that should be asked?

The fact is is that a large number of the Black population here in America has some connection to slavery, direct or indirect. In a lot of situations, just having the skin color of “black” gives way to a perception that someone, somewhere, in your family was probably a slave and you are therefore an “outsider,” whether it’s true or not is invalid in most arguments… (more…)

“Bred” Viciousness?

So, I’m sitting here finally watching “The Wrestler” and as I watch this guy torture himself, his body, and others, my eyes began to wander to the crowd in the film. All of the cheering, jeering, jabbing and stabbing of their own kind, from the wrestlers and the spectators, alike, fuel the “beat-downs” that take place for their own pleasure. And as my eyes began to wander, my mind followed. (more…)

Amy Winehouse

Amy Winehouse

So, now that she is gone and you start to recall all of the stories that ran through the media mill, did society learn anything? Do you wish you could have saved her? Is that your job? Did the media benefit from running stories of this seemingly inevitable train wreck while it was happening? Do they have any culpability? (more…)

“Cheer for your Rapist!”

So a female cheerleader is fined and kicked off of the cheerleading squad because she will not cheer for the male star athlete who raped her or at least,”sexually assaulted” her. Does anyone find anything interesting about this scenario?
